Chapter 8 – Carla's Contentment

The days of this week seemed endless to Carla. She still enjoyed her job but she found her mind drifting when she was at work. She still got everything done but it was a close call a couple of times. On Wednesday she had caught herself daydreaming for half an hour and forced herself to concentrate. It wouldn't do to be late for dinner, she hadn't seen Walt on Monday or Tuesday at all, nor had there been music playing through the wall when she tried to sleep.

She got out of work on time though and headed home. She wanted to dress up for dinner but they weren't going anywhere. She realized that it was another urge to do something to impress Walt. He had shown her his incredible music, taken her out to two great spots in the neighborhood and she'd done what? Made a wet spot on his bed. She couldn't see why someone like him would be interested in someone like her and was desperate to give him some reason for his interest.

Finally she settled on slacks and a tight sweater. This time she got to wear some jewelry though, a thick silver chain around her neck and dangling silver earrings with tiny prisms on the bottom made her feel as though she had put at least a little effort into her appearance.

She went down the hallway and knocked on the door at twenty past five, she knew she was early but couldn't help herself. She had half convinced herself that Walt wasn't all that she had made him out to be and that somehow her memories were showing her someone that wasn't really there. Right after she knocked, she heard him call out:

“Just a minute.”

She settled in to wait, nervously tapping her foot. The door swung open in under a minute and she was assaulted with the smell of fresh baked bread. Walt stood inside the apartment in jeans and a t-shirt, his clothes were lightly dusted with flour in places and there was a smudge of it on his cheek as well.

“Hi” he said, his smile beaming at her.

“Hi yourself. I've missed you.”

He opened the door wide and gestured her into the apartment. The smell of fresh bread was strong in the air and there were undertones of something spicy as well.

“I missed you also but I've been burying myself in work to counteract that, it helps a lot with the current project I'm working on. It keeps you fresh in my mind which both helps and makes me miss you more. But here you are and here I am, together again at last.”

“Taken up melodrama now have you?”

“Sorry, I told you I wasn't good with words.”

“I'm sorry, I was teasing you. I shouldn't have.”

“I'm never sure about things like that. I'll figure it out once we've spent more time together though so don't worry about it.”

“What's for dinner? I'm guessing part of it is fresh bread from the smell.
